Canon Point; A few days after Kinzo leaves her in Doctor Nanjo’s care.
Age; Her canon age is never specified, but she appears to be in her early twenties (21-22)
House; Freya
Power; Energy Transfer
Personality;
Beatrice Castiglioni is not the witch Beatrice and she does not know how to use magic. However, one could go as far to say that Beatrice Castiglioni is the witch Beatrice’s grandmother, they would not be completely inaccurate giving that statement. However, Kinzo did refer to Castiglioni once as a “Golden Witch,” but that was only a romantic saying since she came to him from the sea in a submarine, with the gold he would eventually use to build up his fortune, and gave him a soul by teaching him how wonderful it was to be alive.
Despite having the title of a noble, she dislikes it when people refer to her as “Daughter of the Castiglioni” since she feels that people fail to see her individuality when they call her by that name. She prefers to be called by her first name, or when she’s with friends she is often called “Bice”. She wants others to see her as herself because when they call her Castiglioni it sounds to her as though she is property to the Castiglioni family, like a doll, rather than an individual human being.
Coming from a noble Italian family, Beatrice is well-educated and can speak Italian as well as English. She’s definitely not rigid, though. She’s actually quite the tomboy and has a good sense of humor as seen when she is speaking to Kinzo. She joked on how she thought the seas of Japan would smell like soy sauce, while Kinzo laughed in return and answered that he always thought Italians had hair made of pasta. Beatrice’s reply to that was, “Of course we do. You don’t know how hard it is to get that perfect al dente texture.” Let it be said, though, that tomboy does not always equal to rude. Beatrice speaks in a polite manner, just not as stiff as most nobles may speak. She’s also an easy person to approach and once she sees that you are truly a good person she will be a most loyal friend. She has a great sense of empathy for others too, which was how she was able to get close to Kinzo despite how he wasn’t feeling alive at the military base on Rokkenjima. Since Kinzo also came from a noble family and was also frustrated at how people referred to him by his family name, Beatrice could understand some of his thoughts. Also like Kinzo, she did not know what it meant to be alive. So when Kinzo told her on how she taught him how to live, she was surprised since she believed that it was the other way around.
Beatrice has a good amount of national pride for her motherland Italy, but she still knows how to think for herself based on her own thoughts and feelings. The Italians had been carrying the gold in their submarine because they wanted to hide it in a foreign country until the end of the war so they could use it to rebuild Italy, but then their submarine took damage that made it unable to continue, which was why they stopped at Rokkenjima. Once the Japanese found out about the gold, a fierce negotiation took place between them and the Italians on how the gold should be split between the two sides, with Kinzo and Beatrice acting as translators. Beatrice didn’t even know about the gold until they unloaded it at Rokkenjima, but she still tried to help the two sides reach a solution in their negotiations out of obligation for her country and fellow Italians. Even so, she eventually began to believe that it might have been better if they had just let the gold sink with the submarine, for the rest of the Italians and Japanese were becoming blinded by greed.
Beatrice’s tomboy and “tough act” of behavior comes from her sense of pride, which comes from being looked down on just because she’s a woman. While she is willing to prove herself to others, she does not just rush into things if she can help it. She’s got a good head on her shoulders and enough sense to think before she acts most of the time. However, in dangerous situations, she’s quick to action. When she was cornered during the gunfight between the Italians and Japanese, she made a grab for a gun lying next to her without any hesitation, she also head-butted the leading officer of the Japanese as he attempted to hold her hostage, nearly breaking his nose in the process. To top it all off, she sent a kick to his crotch even though she had his boot digging into her stomach. The last action came about when the officer tried to shoot Kinzo. She’ll do whatever she can in her power to help those she cares about.
Her basic likes are being called by her name or nickname as mentioned before , literature (mostly Italian works), being with friends… Basically just living free and enjoying life. On the other hand her dislikes include cowards who hide behind women, playing the part of the “Daughter of the Castiglioni,” and those who try to bring harm to her friends.
Overall, Beatrice is a remarkable woman who is kind, intelligent, and understanding. She is not the same person as Beatrice the Golden Witch, they only share their physical appearance. She’d rather be treated like a person than a lady. She’s always in the mood for a friendly chat and a good joke. She’s a good listener and has a large heart. She’s loyal to her native Italy, but she still has enough common sense to think about her own feelings and thoughts as well. She only acts like a tomboy so she can convince others that she’s not just a woman, but a human being on equal footing as everyone else. She treasures her friends and her freedom above everything else, but she dislikes those who take such things in vain.
